Dispensing optician erased from GOC register

Barry Church did not appeal the fitness to practise committee’s decision

Cambridgeshire-based dispensing optician Barry Church has been erased from the General Optical Council’s (GOC) register and is now unable to practise as a dispensing optician.

At a hearing in December, a GOC fitness to practise committee found that Mr Church’s fitness to practise was impaired by reason of misconduct relating to a conviction of theft and failing to engage with an investigation by the regulator.

In the allegation against Mr Church, it was claimed that on 22 November 2016 he was convicted of theft by employee at Cambridgeshire Magistrates' Court and on 6 January the following year he was sentenced to 26 weeks' imprisonment, suspended for 24 months.

Mr Church had until 9 January 2020 to appeal his erasure and did not.
