Eye testNew resources to help pre-reg optometrists navigate the process of applying for the NHS England Ophthalmic Performers List have been launched by the Local Optical Committees Support Unit (LOCSU) and the Optical Confederation.

The resources include a step-by-step video guide for pre-reg optometrists applying to the Performers List and another video explaining how to complete the NPL1 application form.

The video guides are included on a new section of the LOCSU website which is dedicated to Performers List applications.

LOCSU clinical director, Katrina Venerus, has spent several months supporting NHS England and Primary Care Services England (PCSE) on Performers List issues.

Ms Venerus explained to OT that many pre-reg optometrists find the NPL1 application form difficult and the process confusing.

“The aim of the guides is to make the process as easy as possible for applicants and more efficient for everyone involved,” she added.

In order to streamline the process, the PCSE is offering appointments for face-to-face document checks in London from 17–27 July. The service is available to pre-reg optometrists who are sitting their Objective Structured Clinical Examination.

“I strongly recommend optometrists take up this opportunity to speed up their application if they can,” Ms Venerus emphasised.

LOCSU’s pre-reg ambassador, Hassnain Safdar, told OT that he had heard about the challenges of the Performers List application process through speaking to recently qualified friends and colleagues.

“It is fantastic that LOCSU has published these videos to help us get through it. It’s also great that we can have the face-to-face appointment while in London to complete that part of the process,” Mr Safdar highlighted.
