The AOP has launched an online guide designed as a resource to support practitioners who are considering setting up their own independent practice.

Produced with support from the Association of British Dispensing Opticians, the 88-page Independent practice guide includes insight from the AOP’s legal, financial and clinical teams, and was overseen by its clinical director, Dr Peter Hampson.

Speaking about the resource, Dr Hampson, who is an independent practice owner himself, explained: “I know from experience that setting up your own practice can be daunting. The AOP’s Independent practice guide aims to make the process as understandable and accessible as possible, giving an honest assessment of the risks, benefits and disadvantages of each option.”

Chapters in the guide cover finding the right practice or location and finance options, recruiting and rewarding staff, purchasing equipment, and conforming to tax and data protection requirements.

Dr Hampson said that he hopes the guide will be something that practitioners return to time and time again during their journey.

The guide can be viewed and downloaded via the AOP website
