With 100% Optical only a month away, and the winter sports season in full swing, eyewear fashion is going to be high on the agenda, writes Henrietta Alderman

In August 1964, British Vogue’s cover featured a stylish image of fashion eyewear. You can find this in the beautiful coffee table book, Fashion Spectacles Spectacular Fashion, by Simon Murray and Nicky Albrechtsen – an excellent way for the fashion-conscious optometrist to spend those Christmas gift vouchers

Fifty-two years on, eyewear and fashion are recognised as being vital ingredients in running a successful optometry business. Many practices have a dazzling display of frames with their a range of brand names – tailored to the tastes and pockets of their local customer base. Patients are increasingly discerning and know that their choice of spectacles will, in some way, reflect their personality, and choosing different pairs of frames for different occasions and outfits is no longer unusual.

January will definitely bring out the winter sports enthusiasts too and they will be looking for advice on appropriate eyewear. It is another opportunity to find out a little more about their lifestyles and to help them with good advice and stylish solutions. 100% Optical, taking place on 4–6 February at London’s ExCeL, is nearly with us and, in addition to being the best education destination in the calendar, it is also the best destination for eyewear fashion. From High Street to boutique – this is definitely where you need to be to see the latest and the best, including products you will not see anywhere else in the UK. And the fashion runway never disappoints.

Of course that wonderful pair of spectacles can only be wonderful if the lenses have the right prescription and they fit as if they were made for the wearer’s face. 100% Optical has been developed into a one-stop learning shop for you and the practice team, with education streams for optometrists, dispensing opticians and – for the first time this year – optical assistants.

"100% Optical...is nearly with is and, in addition to being the best education destination in the calendar, it is also the best destination for eyewear fashion"

This is also the first year that we will host the AOP Awards alongside 100% Optical, celebrating the outstanding performance of optometry practice and those working in them. It continues the themes of excellent teams and outstanding products that are showcased at the event. Celebrating achievement is a great way to round off the education and exhibition day – and is guaranteed fun too.

Much has been achieved in optometry since 1964, and there is much to celebrate. There is also much more to do, and the AOP looks forward to many more years of providing support, enlightenment and stylish ideas to the world of optics.
