AOP to run education stream at ABDO conference

The Association of Optometrists (AOP) has teamed up with the Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO) to offer a two-day education stream during the ABDO’s conference in Manchester next month. 

The diverse programme will see the AOP’s clinical adviser, Trevor Warburton, present on the important topic of making accurate general ophthalmic services claims, as well as a representative from the AOP’s legal team discussing Staying on the right side of the law (and the GOC). 

Other speakers include Professor Andy McNaught presenting on There’s life in the ophthalmoscope, yet and Pearse Keane discussing Binocular OCT – reinventing the eye examination. In addition, Guide Dogs’ Kerry Singleton will be Busting the myths about severe sight loss and blindness. 

A total of 13 CET points are available across the AOP’s education stream, which will also feature a children’s vision Peer Review led by OT multimedia clinical editor, Ceri Smith-Jaynes.

Commenting on the partnership, the AOP’s head of education, Dr Ian Beasley, told OT: “The AOP is delighted to have a strong presence at the ABDO conference this year and will provide a varied education stream across both days offering CET points for practitioners from all disciplines.”

ABDO has also partnered with the British Contact Lens Association (BCLA) to deliver a contact lens and anterior eye symposium during the conference. The event is accredited for 11 CET points and will cover topics such as new advances in contact lens comfort, the management of Demodex mites in High Street practice and a spectacles lenses update for contact lens opticians. 

BCLA chief executive, Cheryl Donnelly, said: “The BCLA is thrilled to be working with ABDO to deliver its contact lens and anterior eye conference stream in Manchester. The programme we have developed is focused, clinical, practical and relevant to all. We hope to see as many people as possible there this September.”

ABDO hopes that the partnerships will help to attract a broad cross section of practitioners to the event, which will be held at the Manchester Conference and Exhibition Centre on 20–21 September.
