Qualified Optometrist

As the sole optometrist on the island, you'll have the unique opportunity to work closely with Dr O’Neal, a respected local ophthalmologist, and Mr Nicholas Lee from Western Eye Hospital in London. Our state-of-the-art practice is equipped with top-of-the-line Zeiss Cirrus 6000 OCT and fundus cameras, Argon Lasers, etc, ensuring the highest standard of eye care for our patients.   1. Job Description: Optometrist at Tortola Vision Centre, Road Town, Tortola, British Virgin Islands
  2. Position: Qualified Optometrist 
  3. Contract: Two years (with an option to renew) 

Starting salary

  1. $72,000 per annum
  2. Local taxes total of 14%

Working hours

  1. Monday to Friday: 9 am - 5 pm
  2. Every other Saturday: 9 am - 2 pm
  3. Potential work on holidays and community service.

Start date 1 August 2024

Benefits

Key responsibilities

  1. Conducting comprehensive eye exams using provided equipment (ophthalmoscope, retinoscope, slit lamp, phoropter, trial lenses, tonometer, autorefractor, lensometer, pupillometer, IOL measurement tools)
  2. Taking detailed medical histories
  3. Performing routine and cycloplegic refractions
  4. Conducting visual field tests, analysing results, and determining the best treatment plans
  5. Writing prescriptions for glasses, contact lenses, and basic medical conditions
  6. Referring complicated medical diagnoses to ophthalmologists
  7. Educating and counselling patients on the proper use and care of glasses, contact lenses, and medications
  8. Checking the prescription and alignment of glasses before dispensing
  9. Performing patient follow-ups.

Requirements

  1. Must be able to work independently, without supervision
  2. Proficient in all duties related to optometry
  3. Honest, reliable, and able to take initiative
  4. Boarding provided for the first month, thereafter, the applicant must find their own accommodation
  5. Responsible for all immigration costs, living expenses, and expenses associated with family members
  6. Responsible for transportation to and from work.

Employment details

  1. Full details of employment will be provided upon application
  2. Tortola Vision Center will pay a portion of your work permit fees up to a maximum of $2000
  3. Assistance with registering with the British Virgin IslandsMedical and Dental council will be give
  4. Remuneration based on experience and evaluation
  5. Salary is paid twice per month.

Indemnity insurance

This is done via the practice but you will need to contribute $1000 per year.
