Description of role: The optometrist will be working alongside the ophthalmologist providing pre and post-operative care to patients due to undergo eye surgeries such as laser vision correction and cataract removal. You will be engaging patients to determine their vision problems and taking and recording patients’ histories, general and ocular health. The consultation will include an examination of the patients’ eyes using observation, instruments, equipment and drops.
The examination will determine unaided and aided visual acuity for distance and near and accurate refraction. Diagnostic scans such as auto refraction, specular microscopy, biometry, topography, pupillometry, ocular motor balance, slit lamp examination and tonometry will need to be performed. Training will be provided.
A contact lens trial may also be necessary and so contact lens experience is essential. You will be required to discuss the test results with the ophthalmologist. You must enjoy working alongside a small team of colleagues and have excellent communication skills to deal with a wide range of people. Also strong interpersonal skills are necessary to put anxious patients at ease.
