Description of role:
The School of Health Sciences and Social Work (SHSSW) within the University of Portsmouth’s Faculty of Science has an ambitious strategy and growing activity within vision sciences, which benefits from the outstanding environment in research and teaching across all academic disciplines within the School.
In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), 90 per cent of research in Allied Health Professions was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent, though the School is far from complacent in its successes. Aspiring to be sector leading in vision sciences, the School are now seeking to appoint a senior academic to the role of Professor / Reader in Vision Sciences (Optometry). The appointee will join the School at an exciting time of investment with an on-campus clinical facility for optometry services due to be in operation later this year.
The post-holder will take on a leading role in teaching and learning provision in optometry as overseer of the School’s taught programme for optometry (the Masters of Optometry). They will have demonstrable experience of course management at a strategic level, as evidenced through the delivery of high quality education and student experience via the piloting of new procedures and innovative concepts in learning.
The appointee will play a pivotal and leading role in correspondence with the General Optical Council (GOC) regarding programme development to ensure that the School remains deeply connected to practice, bringing enormous positive impact to student experience.
An established academic with research and teaching expertise in any area of vision sciences / optometry, the post-holder will continue to drive forward their own academic career, publishing in high-quality journals within their field of expertise. As a senior academic within the School, they will participate collaboratively in mentoring more junior colleagues.
Salary at professorial level will be commensurate with the appointee’s accomplishments and potential. The salary for an appointment at Reader level will fall within the University’s Pay Scales for appointments at this grade.
