Ophthalmology provider, Newmedica, has confirmed plans for further expansion in the UK with six new centres to open in the first half of 2022.

The provider of NHS-funded ophthalmology services opened two clinics in the last two months of 2021, in Shrewsbury and Norwich, which it suggests are helping to relieve pressure on the local health systems.

Newmedica is now planning to open a further six new clinics and surgical centres in the first half of the year, and is also looking for more sites to increase its geographical reach later in 2022.

Rebecca Lythe, managing director of Newmedica, commented: “With NHS waiting times at an all-time-high in some parts of the country, now feels like the right time to expand our business and, in doing so, support the NHS to deliver services in a timely way for the benefit of local patients.”

The eye health provider currently runs more than 23 services across England. Services are provided for NHS Clinical Commissioning Groups, NHS Trusts and Foundation Trusts, and other providers of NHS-funded services.

Newmedica Shrewsbury opened in October, is run by an all-female team of partners, and created 20 jobs in the area. The centre has a range of hospital-grade technology, including a microscope with a teaching arm, which can be used to provide surgical training.

Newmedica Norwich opened in November and employs 30 staff currently, with plans to expand in the future.
