Urquhart Opticians expands with fifth practice

The site represents a six-figure investment as well as marking the business’ return to North Ayrshire

The Ayrshire-based independent optometry group, Urquhart Opticians, has expanded to a fifth practice, with the acquisition of a former Optical Express site in Kilwinning.

The six-figure investment will see the site refurbished, rebranded and restocked to offer Urquhart Opticians' eye care and hearing care services and eyewear range.

Neil Gray (pictured), an independent prescribing optometrist who was worked with Urquhart Opticians since 2018, has been named director of the new practice in Kilwinning. Optical assistant, Liberty McArdle (also pictured), will also be joining the practice.

Describing the plans for the new practice, Mr Gray said: “Over the coming months, patients will see the practice transformed. Besides a complete rebranding and refurbishment, we will be introducing the latest in eye care technology and introducing stylish eyewear from many of the world’s most exciting designers.”

The acquisition forms the latest in a number of investments the company has made in patient care and premises in recent years, including the acquisition of a practice in Ayr last year.

In addition to expanding the company’s footprint, the move also marks the company’s return to North Ayrshire, 90 years after the founder, Robert Urquhart, moved from Dreghorn to Kilmarnock – where the business has been headquartered since.

Commenting on the expansion, Peter Telfer, director of Urquhart Opticians, said: “As a business, we are 100% focused on Ayrshire and are thrilled to be able to return the Urquhart Opticians name to North Ayrshire.

“As with all of our practices, Kilwinning’s Urquhart Opticians is in the heart of the town centre. Despite the many challenges faced by our town centres, not least during recent months, we firmly believe in their future as centres of independent retail, service and community.”
