Leightons Opticians & Hearing Care, The Hearing Care Partnership and the Ida Institute in Denmark have entered into a partnership that aims to “enhance the quality of audiological rehabilitation and support the advancement of hearing care.”

It is the first time that the Ida Institute has partnered with a consumer outlet, with the partnership announced as the institute seeks to engage with organisations in order to strengthen and promote a culture of person-centred care in audiology. It aims to do this by teaming up with professional organisations, patient associations and universities around the world.

Commenting on the partnership, CEO of Leighton Opticians and Hearing Care and The Hearing Care Partnership, Ryan Leighton, told OT: “I feel incredibly proud that we are the first private-sector organisation across the globe to have partnered with IDA. I’m inspired by what we will learn, what we will be able to contribute and how this will help to further develop our person-centred care for our patients.”
The partnership will include activities such as training staff using tools and methods from the Ida Institute, as well as collaborating on the development and testing of new tools and resources for person-centered care.

Leightons has already launched what it describes as an “ambitious” internal training programme that is aimed at strengthening the involvement of communication partners during an appointment.

The optical group is also using ethnographic videos developed by the Ida Institute to raise awareness amongst optometry staff about the importance of hearing and of the specific challenges related to hearing loss.

Mr Leighton added: “Our goal is to enable people to live life to the fullest through understanding the link between hearing, vision and health. Collaboration with the Ida Institute allows us to enhance our holistic approach to care and perhaps even expand some of the Ida Institute methods and tools to our optometry services.”

Managing director of the Ida Institute, Lise Lotte Bundesen, described Leightons as “an organisation committed to the values of person-centred care.”

“We are extremely happy to be partnering with them and look forward to working together to strengthen the provision of person-centred care throughout their network,” she added.

The Ida Institute is a non-profit organisation founded in 2007 that has a community of 14,000 hearing health care professionals worldwide.
