Optical Express has reopened its scheme which offers free laser eye surgery to people working within eye care.

Available to all optometrists, ophthalmologists, dispensing opticians, students and trainees within the profession, Optical Express initially offered refractive surgery free of charge to eye care professionals for three months from September 2013. Almost 1,000 optometrists, dispensing opticians and students took up the offer and had refractive surgery.

As a result, Optical Express reported that 98% of those treated said they were either very satisfied or satisfied with the care they received from their surgeon. Furthermore, 95% of those treated said that they would recommend it to their friends and family, and 94% said that it had changed the way in which they would discuss corrective surgery with their own patients.

Speaking about the scheme, chairman and CEO of Optical Express, David Moulsdale, said: “The best way for people to understand the benefits of refractive surgery to new patients is to see it for themselves. That is why we have decided to re-open our scheme offering free treatment to eye care professionals and students.”

Referring to the introduction of the scheme in 2013, Mr Moulsdale added: “When we last ran this scheme we were overwhelmed both by the interest and in the results. Virtually everyone who had treatment with Optical Express had their opinion transformed about laser eye surgery and, as a result were much more willing to discuss their experience positively with their own patients.

“I hope that the public can take confidence that so many people working in eye care have had such an amazing experience with laser eye surgery. Being free from glasses and contact lenses allows people to do so much more with their lives. We treat tens of thousands of patients each year and the results they achieve are nothing short of extraordinary.”

Laser eye surgery has been offered in the UK for over 20 years, with the multiple charging between £595 to £1,295 per eye, depending on the treatment.
