Not wearing glasses can increase a user’s Tinder matches by 10% according to new research
19 April 2017
People in Britain prefer their dates without glasses, according to a new social experiment performed by Optical Express.
As part of the national experiment, two test dating profiles were set up on the dating app Tinder for two models, Max Lohan and Gee Burridge. The profiles had almost identical images, with the only difference being whether they were wearing spectacles or not.
The profiles were activated in London, Manchester and Glasgow and were live for 48 hours, with the total number of matches and individual messages that each profile received logged.
The study revealed that the profile pictures without spectacles received almost 10% more matches than the profile pictures with spectacles. In London, Mr Logan received almost four times more matches for his spectacle-free profile than his bespectacled one, and in Manchester both the non-spectacle profiles combined received 8% more matches.
However, Glasgow was labelled as a spectacles-loving location because both of the profiles with the models wearing spectacles received 7% more matches.
Whether the reactions were good or bad, the profiles that featured spectacles also sparked conversation, with matches sending messages about them. One of Ms Burridge's matches said: “Hey, love your specs,” while another poked fun at them: “Your glasses are wider than the channel tunnel.”
Spokesperson for Optical Express, Shami Thomas, said: "It’s great to see that so many single people across the country are keeping an open mind in choosing their online dates – and even using specs as a way to break the ice.
"While for some, spectacles are an inconvenience, with many choosing to wear contact lenses or undergo laser eye surgery – but for others, a pair of bold frames are an extension of their personality."
"No matter your personal preference – there are now a variety of procedures, treatments and eye care solutions available," she added.
