Emma Bunton: me and my glasses

Former Spice Girl Emma Bunton speaks to OT  about eyewear and the importance of eye care

How many pairs of spectacles and sunglasses do you own?

I own three pairs of specs and maybe three or four pairs of sunglasses. I used to have more but having children, I have two sons, means they can get broken these days. Now I keep them locked up in boxes.

Do you have a favourite pair?

Yes my new pair of Specsavers own. They are tortoiseshell and are just so comfy. They are light and not too heavy.

Can you describe your first pair of spectacles?

It was many years ago and they had a see-through plastic frame. They weren’t overly attractive, but served a purpose for a year – until I sat on them and broke them. I first started wearing specs when I was about 17 or 18 but then I stopped for a while, as I was so busy. Glasses are just so fashionable now, even my kids want a pair. We even take the lenses out of my old pairs and have fun with them.

Who would you pick as your eyewear style icon and why?

Obviously Johnny Depp, but I saw Kate Hudson recently and she looks very cool in specs, very classy which I like.

What prompted you to go for an eye examination?

I started to find things more difficult. I am on the radio and every morning we read through the papers and sometimes have scripts to read but it was becoming difficult, especially so very early in the morning. Glasses opened up a whole new world. I can see everything clearly now.

What symptoms were you experiencing?

I was finding it difficult to read and was not picking things up as I should, plus the TV was becoming blurry. No other symptoms really though.

Has wearing spectacles changed your outlook on eye care?

Absolutely. It’s something I don’t remember when I was young but now both my kids go for an eye test every year and the nice thing is that they find them fun and interesting.

Do you wear contact lenses?

I have done in the past for TV and radio work, but now I love my glasses too much to wear them.
