Grafton Optical has launched Mask-it Disposable Eye Patches, a set of single-use paper patches that can be used for monocular occlusions.

The company said it launched sales of the patches in response to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. CEO of Grafton Optical, David Thickens, explained: “Our customers are looking for each and every way to keep services running as normal for their patients, using new and innovative products to reduce the risks of virus transmission.”

“Visual fields testing using a traditional eye patch is one of those everyday areas where an easy and low-cost change can be made to make a big difference to both patients and staff,” he added.

The single-use patches form a cone over the eye, allowing patients to keep both eyes open during testing, eliminating dark adaptation and corneal surface change. One patch can also be used on both of a patient’s eyes.

The company suggests the disposable patches can replace traditional reusable eye patches, reducing the difficulty of sterilising the patches between uses and giving patients “confidence” that a sterile product is being used.

“It removes the necessity for the practitioner to try to fully sterilise eye patches between patients, saving time and reducing the risk of transmission,” Mr Thickens added.

He explained that the product has proved “incredibly popular” in the first few weeks of sale with practices and hospitals alike, adding: “We are confident from customer feedback that the use of this product will very much become routine practice as normal service begins to resume.”
