Keeler launches Tonocare
Product manager at Keeler, Bhupinder Lotay, tells OT about working with aerodynamic experts to develop Tonocare

Keeler has launched Tonocare – a hand-held, non-contact tonometer that offers a more comfortable experience for patients.
Manufactured in the UK, Tonocare is based on the Pulsair tonometer but uses soft air puff technology.
Speaking to OT, product manager at Keeler, Bhupinder Lotay, explained: “We’ve worked on a new piston design, which ensures the puff is comfortable. It’s inherent with some tonomoters that the puff can be quite hard. We worked with aerodynamic experts to consider how the air is going to come out of the device and hit the eye.”
Designed for use outside of the examination room, Tonocare features a rechargeable battery that lasts for 3000 readings and can be charged on a dedicated docking station.
When looking down the viewfinder, practitioners will see a white box. As they get closer to the eye, a green cross will appear and once that’s aligned with the white box, the device will automatically take as many readings as required.
Mr Lotay added that the device has been in development for over two years and was previewed in Europe before its introduction to the UK market.
“The main challenge for a device like this, is to make it easy to pick up and use,” he said, explaining: “With a table top device, there’s a chin rest and head mount that’s all in the ideal position. With a hand-held device, the user’s hand is moving and the patient’s head is moving, so we needed to provide stability and ensure all of the software inside is capable of being precise. It needs to gauge when it’s in the right position.”
