A pliable solution to dry eye discomfort

Bausch & Lomb (B+L) has announced that the Therapearl Eye-ssential Mask is now available in new packaging. Branded with the contact lens manufacturer’s logo, the product forms part of the company’s family of eye care products.  

B+L told OT  that the mask can offer either hot or cold eye therapy, so its “dual action provides twice the therapeutic benefit that could be obtained with a hot or cold pack.”

The mask uses the company’s ‘Pearl Technology,’ creating a soft and pliable mask which can be heated up in a microwave or cooled in a freezer and then placed over the eyes and forehead delivering up to 20 minutes of relief. 

B+L explained that the mask can be recommended cold to patients who suffer from headaches or have puffy eyes, or used hot for patients suffering from dry eyes, blepharitis, styes or meibomian gland dysfunction.

The contact lens company highlights that heat therapy can naturally relieve tired and dry eyes, an issue which can affect half of people (50.6%) according to their data.

B+L also argues that people are spending more time in air-conditioned spaces, in front of computers or looking at smartphones, which they say can cause dry eyes, adding: “The symptoms can be even worse if you wear contact lenses.”

B+L professional services support, Serena Kalsi, told OT: “The Therapearl Eye-ssential Mask is an essential addition to B+L’s growing over-the-counter range of products to help combat the symptoms of dry eye and ocular discomfort. 

“When heated, it conforms easily to the eyelids and areas around the eye, providing a warm, meibum melting temperature that remains consistent for up to 20 minutes. 

“When used cold, as well as relieving sore, itchy eyes brought on by allergy, research has shown that patients suffering from acute headaches and migraines can find an effective form of pain relief when using a frozen gel pack. This product offers symptomatic relief for a diverse range of conditions for our patients,” she added.

Therapearl Eye-ssential Mask has been found to be ideal for dry eye relief. In a clinical trial Therapearl Eye-ssential Mask was shown to retain heat for longer than other eye masks on the market, and it had stable heat retention.
