Contact lens expert, Professor Nathan Efron has been recognised in the Queen’s Birthday honours list for his ‘eminent service to medicine.
He has received the Companion (AC) in the Order of Australia, for eminent service to medicine in the field of clinical optometry, particularly as an academic, researcher and author for the treatment of juvenile diabetes.
The Order of Australia aims to recognise people, by national honour, who have made outstanding contributions which benefit the community, and ultimately Australia. Established in 1975, it is Australia’s second highest award of recognition.
A research professor at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia, Professor Efron has published over 800 scientific articles and 16 books during his career, which spans over 30 years.
Professor Efron graduated from the University of Melbourne, where he also completed his PhD in 1981. In 1990 he became founding chairman of the clinical optometry at the University of Manchester, where he established a contact lens research unit known as Eurolens Research. In 1992 he was appointment head of department and later became dean of research at the institution.
Professor Efron is also a past president of the British Contact Lens Association, a position he held in 1997.
