The career of former chief technology officers at Johnson & Johnson Vision Care was recognised at the BCLA last weekend

A former chief technology officer at Johnson & Johnson Vision Care (J&J), Tony Martin, has received the British Contact Lens Association (BCLA) Industry Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the contact lens industry.
Awarded the accolade at the association's annual conference and exhibition at the weekend (30 May), Mr Martin worked at forefront of J&J's Acuvue portfolio for more than 30 years.
As an integral member of the contact lens manufacturer's team which first brought Acuvue disposable contact lenses to market, over the years Mr Martin lead the development of new Acuvue products, including lenses for astigmatism, colour and bifocal wear. He also drove the development of silicone hydrogel lenses with Acuvue Advance and Acuvue Oasys, as well as the 1-Day Acuvue TruEye.
After being presented with the award by outgoing BCLA president, Susan Bowers, Mr Martin commented: "It's a great honour to accept this award, and I do so on behalf of all of the team members who were part of the development of Acuvue. We knew that introducing a disposable soft contact lens had the potential to dramatically change the market, but I'm not sure we ever really thought about how successful it would become. It gives me a great sense of pride to see how my colleagues have continued to develop the Acuvue products, in response to the changing vision care needs of patients."
