Charity video demonstrates vision impairment

The Thomas Pocklington Trust has created a video to help demonstrate how the world can look to people with vision impairment.

The video, ‘What do we see? How the world looks to blind and partially sighted people,’ focuses on the six most common sight conditions in the UK; cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa, hemianopia, age-related macular degeneration and glaucoma.

Produced with assistance from the RNIB and Glaucoma UK, the video shows each of the conditions overlaid onto footage of an everyday activity, and to varying degrees of severity. Each simulation features a narration which describes the condition, its cause, demographics, impact and available treatment.

Chief executive for the Thomas Pocklington Trust, Charles Colquhoun, said: “This is the first time a video of this kind has been produced.

“Visual impairment varies greatly from person to person, and it is sometimes difficult to demonstrate what people with the various conditions experience – until now.”

Mr Colquhoun continued, “We hope this video will help other businesses and sight loss organisations in their work – whether for staff and volunteer vision impairment awareness training, to educate architects and town planners, or engage corporates in campaigns.”
