OGS appoints development manager

Optometrist and past AOP chairman, David Shannon, has been appointed UK development manager of Optometry Giving Sight (OGS). 

Joining OGS, Mr Shannon will support the charity’s fundraising team as it coordinates events for this year’s World Sight Day Challenge which takes place on 8 October, including the popular Optics Cycling for Sight.

Established by students at the University of Bradford in 2011, Optics Cycling for Sight calls on the profession to collectively cycle 25,000 miles and raise £25,000 in donations. This year Essilor has pledged to match fund the first £10,000 raised by the challenge.  

Mr Shannon commented: “Optics Cycling for Sight is a really fun way for individuals, companies or practices to raise much-needed funds for some of the 600 million people in the world who are needlessly visually impaired simply through the lack of vision correction.”

Urging people to take to their bikes, Mr Shannon added: “Practitioners can organise their own challenge anytime in September or October. If they collect £1 per mile cycled, it is only three miles to provide a person with an eye examination and a pair of spectacles.”
