Optometry Giving Sight has officially launched the 2015 World Sight Day Challenge.

Now in its seventh year, the annual charity initiative encourages the profession to raise funds throughout September and October to help support people around the world who are visually impaired as a result of uncorrected avoidable issues.

Chair and trustee of Optometry Giving Sight’s national committee, Nick Rumney, commented: “We have the opportunity to make a direct impact by having fun in our day to day activities whilst eliminating avoidable blindness due to the simple need of an eye examination and spectacles – a very empowering role that I invite everyone to join in with.”

To date, the World Sight Day Challenge has helped support the funding of 72 projects in 42 counties.

Urging practitioners to get involved in this year’s World Sight Day Challenge, CEO of Optometry Giving Sight, Clive Miller, said: “Participation in the Challenge is fun and easy to do. Whether you choose to write a cheque, purchase a wristband, become a monthly donor, run a promotion or get involved in fundraising, this is the time when the global optometric profession and industry rallies together to ensure that all people can gain access to the vision care they need.”
