Optometrist Derek Michael has raised £584 for Vision Aid Overseas by completing a 17,600ft climb up Mount Everest.

The director and partner at the Annan and Lockerbie-based James Kidner Opticians, which is part of the Hakim Group, completed the trek to base camp in eight days with his daughter Carolyn.

Speaking about the climb, Mr Michael said: “It was Carolyn who challenged me to complete it, telling me I had to do it before I got too old. It was great to have the company of family that far away from home.”

He explained that the reduced oxygen levels made for a challenge towards the end of the climb as his body tired and his resting heart rate increased.

“It was very satisfying to exceed our fundraising total and I’d like to thank everyone who donated and supported our cause. The support we’ve received by our patients coming into practice has been brilliant,” he added.
