Black & Lizars optical assistant named best in UK on WCSM course

Abbie Skene scored the highest marks in the written and practical exams of the optical support qualification

Abbie Skene

A Black & Lizars optical assistant in Aberdeenshire has achieved the best overall marks in the UK for the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers’ (WCSM) optical support qualification.

Trainee clinical assistant at the group’s Aberdeen Union Street practice, Abbie Skene, scored the highest marks in the written and practical exams of the course, which included modules on the anatomy of the eye, eye diseases and frame designs.

Speaking about the achievement, Ms Skene said: “It was a lovely surprise getting the top marks in the country. I didn’t expect it, but it made me feel very proud.

This course has given me the confidence to go further and I am considering doing the dispensing optician course which would result in a degree.”

Ms Skene has been with Black & Lizars for three years. For achieving the highest marks, she will receive £250 and an invitation to an awards ceremony in London (18 October) held by the WCSM.

Clinical services manager at Black & Lizars, Graham Freeman, said: “We are very proud of Abbie and what she has achieved. We always champion our practice teams looking to continue training and up-skill.”
