Optometrist runs 13.2 miles for charity

Optometrist at Specsavers in Swindon, Ahmed Ejaz, has raised more than £500 for charity.

Mr Ejaz ran the Swindon half marathon in aid of the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB), completing the 13.2-mile course in one hour and 59 minutes.

Speaking about his chosen charity, Mr Ejaz told OT that he wanted to run for the RNIB because of the vital work that the charity does to ensure the wellbeing of people with sight loss.

“I feel that the charity shares the same sense of compassion we all hold as optometrists in relation to those with issues with their vision,” he shared, adding: “Nationally, Specsavers and the RNIB are partnering to transform the nations eye health and defend against avoidable sight loss, so this was a great opportunity for us at Specsavers Swindon to do our part locally and raise awareness for the campaign.”

As Mr Ejaz’s first half marathon he admits that he found the course challenging and was helped across the finish line by people across the route cheering him on. “I was exhausted by the end, but thrilled to have completed the race in just under two hours,” he said.

Reflecting on the challenge, the optometrist said: “I would encourage all optometrists to try and get involved in runs like this. It's a great opportunity to get out the test room and get fit, engage with the community and surroundings and raise vital funds for your charity.”
