The British Universities Committee of Contact Lens Educators (BUCCLE) held its summer meeting in Liverpool (8 June), during which it welcomed senior lecturer in optometry from the University of Portsmouth, Jo Mackenzie, to the committee.

Companies present at the meeting included Alcon, who provided an update on its successful scholarship programme for early-career optometrists, and CooperVision, who highlighted changes to its Future Ocular Research Creativity Event (FORCE) competition that aims to encourage contact lens research in undergraduates.

In light of the DEWS II report, which is due to be published in July, the consistency of dry eye teaching across all member organisations was a discussion point at the meeting.

Reflecting on the meeting, a BUCCLE spokesperson said: “It was decided at the meeting that members would share what, how and where dry eye is being taught in their respective undergraduate programmes.”

The Autumn BUCCLE meeting will take place in Glasgow Caledonian University in September. The focus will be to review and agree upon evidence-based, best practice for teaching dry eye.
