Opthalmologist takes on London to Paris challenge for charity

A Buckinghamshire ophthalmologist will cycle from London to Paris over four days this month to raise funds for Blind Veterans UK, a national charity for vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

Ranjit – “Binnie” – Sandhu will set of from London today (20 July) and will finish at the Eiffel Tower in Paris on Saturday (23 July).

As a consultant ophthalmologist at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital, Ms Sandhu has worked with Blind Veterans UK and seen first-hand the support that it provides vision-impaired ex-Service men and women.

She said: “I have had the opportunity to work with veterans who have suffered sight loss by providing clinical and much required moral support at Blind Veterans UK’s London headquarters.

“Meeting the veterans, both at the London office as well as the charity’s Buckingham Palace Garden Party last year, was inspirational and rewarding. It is wonderful to see the tremendous support offered by Blind Veterans UK for those who have devoted a lot of their time and effort for their country.”

Blind Veterans UK was founded in 1915 with the purpose of helping and supporting soldiers who were blinded in World War I. However, the organisation has gone on to support more than 35,000 blind veterans and their families, spanning World War II to recent conflicts including Iraq and Afghanistan.
