Optometrist Roy Trayton Styles has died

Roy Trayton

OT is sad to report the death of optometrist Roy Trayton Styles who died on 11 July at the age of 88 following a short illness.

Mr Styles was both an examiner for, and a liveryman of, the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers.

He trained at the Northampton Polytechnic and London Refraction Hospital and worked for 12 years at Burnett Hodd Optometry in London. He subsequently joined the G C Bateman Group in Bristol where he remained until his retirement.

A former colleague, who asked not to be named, speculated that Mr Styles’ expertise in composition as a photographer “might have enhanced his ability to detect abnormalities in the retinal scene since he was particularly astute in detecting peripheral abnormalities using direct ophthalmoscopy with an undilated pupil.”

Mr Styles interests included classical music, playing the bassoon and travel.

He is survived by his wife, Sheila, his sons Richard, Graham and Roger, and his daughter, Pippa.
