Contact lens optician Nick Howard has been awarded a Freedom of the City of London, which recognises people who have made a significant contribution in their field.
Originally granted to allow professionals to carry out their trade or craft in the City, it is one of the oldest surviving traditional ceremonies in England, with recent recipients including Dame Judy Dench, Stephen Fry, Jessica Ennis and Sir Ian McKellen.
Speaking about the accolade, Mr Howard said: “As a Northern lad who works from time to time in London, I am amazed and a touch overwhelmed that I was invited to apply for the Freedom. As a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers – a highly respected 16th century London Guild, I was given the opportunity to become part of the splendid tradition and heritage associated with this walled City.”
