Specsavers has launched a new hybrid programme for pre-registration optometrists that brings together domiciliary and practice placements.

Starting later this year, the introduction of the hybrid programme follows the launch of domiciliary summer placements last summer, and marks a first for Specsavers.

Pre-registration optometrists in the hybrid programme will work in a practice and a domiciliary team.

Victoria Taylor, Specsavers head of graduate recruitment, commented: “The student mindset is all about changing lives and Home Visits can really make a difference.”

“The new hybrid programme is about getting insights into domiciliary optometry as well as in a retail environment, while gaining all the competencies required to qualify, with the same high standard of learning support you would expect from Specsavers,” she explained.

Through the domiciliary summer placements, students shadow one of Specsavers’ domiciliary partners visiting patients in private homes and care facilities, covering the full patient journey.

Taylor suggested the placements will illustrate “the different aspects of care and cases the team deal with.”

She added: “This invaluable experience will demonstrate how different pathology can be managed and diagnosed in a home environment as well as how referral processes are focused around patient choice.”

Specsavers has confirmed that it is currently offering summer placements in practices, following two years of disruption brought about by the pandemic. Part-time employment opportunities are also available in practices.

Taylor shared: “We absolutely encourage all students to get some practice exposure. It stands them in good stead for their future career opportunities.”

With summer placements still available, students wishing to apply can email: [email protected].
