The first two-day contact lens workshop held at City, University of London, attracted more than 70 delegates. Plans are now being developed to hold a similar event in two years time, possibly in January again.
Staff from City’s Division of Optometry and Visual Science held the event, City WinC, on 16–17 January to celebrate the introduction of specialised clinics in dry eye management and myopia research.
Held at the university’s reopened optometry clinic, City Sight, the event aimed to help practitioners improve their investigative skills and to develop specialisms in complex contact lens fittings and dry eye assessment and management.
Optometrists and contact lens opticians were able to gain a total of 34 CET points at the event.
On the first day of the workshop, delegates gained hands-on experience inserting and removing mini-scleral and hybrid contact lenses. They also learned about the management of complex contact lens cases and improving their communication skills when fitting presbyopic patients.
In addition, the event gave practitioners a better understanding of myopia control and orthokeratology.
On day two, the delegates had a chance to try out the latest instruments in dry eye management, including the award-nominated BlephEx, as well as TearLab and LipiFlow. They were also able to try punctal plugging.
The practitioners also attended a session on dry eye assessment and were provided with an overview of the condition, including tips on how to manage dry eye patients in practice.
The workshops were organised by staff members, Drs Manbir Nagra and Byki Huntjens, along with industry partners including No7 Contact Lenses, Bausch & Lomb, Scope Ophthalmics, Alcon, Allergan, Tear Science and Kestrel Ophthalmics. Additionally, the charity, UK Keratoconus Self-Help and Support Group, offered educational material to practitioners as part of the WinC exhibition.
City, University of London optometry lecturer, Dr Manbir Nagra, told OT: “We were delighted with the positive response from delegates and exhibitors. It was a really fun few days. There was lots of learning and networking
“The interaction and hands-on experience seems to have given many practitioners increased confidence in specialised areas of practice.
