I think that the key factor here is that Peter wanted Craig and there is mutual respect which is why there is a genuine effort to look after one another. These two are genuinely good guys and their story is happy one. I guess if Peter is wanting to extend the mentoring a little further he/Craig could give advice on what things to look for when people are looking for/to make similar opportunities.

Succession planning is all very well but I and many others have been lured into joining an independent practice, working hard for 3-5 years and when the time comes to make an offer or take on the business the goalposts change and the practice is sold to someone new or the asking price is unaffordable based on financial performance. I think many independent owners of retirement age have lived through the good years in optics and do not appreciate the reality of lean years ahead for the sector, valuing their business based on the wealth it has generated for them not on the challenges that lie ahead.
