Gala dinner raises over £7,000 for Manchester eye hospital
Charity fundraiser held at top restaurant will help to purchase new equipment for a 'better understanding' of genetic eye diseases
02 October 2015
A recent gala dinner raised a total of £7,436 for Manchester Royal Eye Hospital (MREH). Held at the Vermillion restaurant in central Manchester earlier this month (10 March), the ‘Visions@Vermilion’ gala dinner included a charity auction with prizes including a pair of signed football boots from Manchester United player Jonny Evans, a football signed by the Manchester City team and signed football shirts from both teams.
Speakers at the dinner included local business leaders, MREH consultant ophthalmic surgeon, Professor Christopher Lloyd, and chair of the MREH Charity fundraising board, Maurice Watkins CBE.
Commenting on what the fundraiser will achieve, Mr Watkins said: “We are very grateful for the generosity of Vermilion. The support of companies like Vermilion is vitally important in delivering the very best treatment, research and care at Manchester Royal Eye Hospital. In particular their support will make a significant difference to the lives of young patients newly diagnosed with eye conditions. This can understandably be a frightening time for both the patients and their families.”
The chairman told OT that the funds will go towards the purchase of new specialist equipment for the hospital, including a DNA sequencer, which will “enable researchers at the hospital to better understand inherited eye diseases.”
Mr Watkins added: “More patients than ever before will be able to be treated, while greatly reducing the trauma that they might experience.”
