Out of the box learning

Undergraduates at Anglia Ruskin University combined learning with charity fundraising recently when they hosted a one-day Out of the Box Optics event. 

The initiative saw third-year optometry students from Anglia Ruskin and Aston universities gather at Anglia Ruskin’s eye clinic for the revision day, which also supported Vision Care for Homeless People (VCHP). 

The format was designed to help undergraduates from both institutions prepare for their pre-reg year and beyond.

The morning session saw students participate in mock Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) stations. There was also an ocular disease picture test and a quiz designed to their students’ general optometry knowledge.

A lunchtime equipment fair was hosted by Grafton Optical, while presentations during the day featured Gajan Seehra, who shared his experience volunteering for VCHP, and Karmelo Modina, who spoke on the variety that a career in optometry can bring. 

The afternoon featured a game of optometry Articulate, during which a member from each team was required to articulate an optometry word chosen at random to their teammates.

Grafton Optical awarded each member of the winning Anglia Ruskin team a D-Eye, an iPhone camera lens attachment for portable fundus photography. All students received a goodie bag featuring donations from CooperVision, MODO eyewear and Out of the Box Optics.

In the lead up to the event, all students raised funds for VCHP, with Anglia Ruskin undergraduate, Megan Vaughan, recognised for individually raising the most funds.
