A Manchester optometrist has travelled to Lebanon to test the sight of Syrian and Palestinian refugees.
Yousuf Mohammed’s employer, Optical Express, donated 500 pairs of children’s and adult frames to help correct the vision of those displaced by conflict.
Mohammed volunteered as part of The Gift of Sight programme in Lebanon, which is run by the charity Jigsaw.
He shared that the majority of patients he helped through the programme were children who had not had their vision tested before.
“Seeing their smiles light up when they first put on the glasses was amazing. It is life-changing for these children,” he said.
Optical Express chief executive, David Moulsdale, highlighted that the company was proud to support Mohammed in assisting refugees.
“Through providing recycled and second-hand glasses, we were able to fulfil our sustainability principles in tandem with providing vital medical assistance. We recognise the importance of improving access to eye care and feel passionate about helping refugees impacted by war and instability,” he said.
