Hoya Vision Care UK has launched its myopia management solution in the UK, the Miyosmart lens with patented Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (DIMS) technology.

The myopia management solution was created to address and manage myopia in children and developed in collaboration with the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

The Miyosmart lens incorporates DIMS technology, which utilises hundreds of small defocus islands to create a myopic defocus effect. The company suggested this helps to slow myopia progression and axial elongation in myopic children.

The technology has received a number of awards, including the Silmo d’Or award in the Vision category in October 2020, as well as the Grand Prize, Grand Award, and Gold Medal at the 46th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva in 2018.

The launch of the lens follows a successful two-year randomised clinical trial, carried out in Hong Kong. The trial demonstrated that children wearing DIMS spectacle lenses had a reduction of 60% of their myopia progression, compared to those wearing single vision lenses, Hoya UK shared.

In addition to the DIMS technology, the Miyosmart lenses also feature a low-maintenance multi-coating that is water repellent and durable, as well as offering UV protection and impact resistance.

To support the launch, Hoya UK is providing a series of webinars and training on Miyosmart, for all eye care professionals who plan to dispense the lens.

Commenting on the launch, Hoya UK’s professional service director, Andrew Sanders, called Miyosmart “the myopia management option that optometry professionals have been waiting for.”

He added: “The introduction of such an effective treatment only emphasises Hoya’s innovatory stance within the optical industry, and we can’t wait to see the difference it will make.”
