Creating healthy, low stress workplaces for optometrists

Pilot launch of new AOP guidance at 100% Optical

Health and wellbeing

In our 2017 health and wellbeing survey, we uncovered several factors that contribute to workplace stress for optometrists. In response, we’ve created a short guide; Creating healthy, low-stress workplaces for optometrists, that summarises our conclusions from the research and from our collaborations with employers, highlighting the five key factors that contribute to a healthy workplace.

We are launching a pilot of the guide at 100% Optical, 27-29 January 2018.

Anyone attending the session 'Creating a healthy low-stress workplace for optometrists', at 16.45 on Sunday 28 January, worth 3 interactive CET points, will receive a copy. This session is now fully booked, but the guide will also be available to members and non-members on the AOP stand number W300 throughout the show. We will launch the guide to the wider membership in the April issue of Optometry Today (OT).

Five key factors for a healthy workplace

The guide highlights the five key factors that contribute to a healthy, low-stress workplace:

  • The importance of the optometrist’s role is recognised
  • Workloads and work patterns are well-managed
  • A comfortable working environment with adequate rest breaks
  • Fostering good team relationships
  • Openness about change, and the need for change

The guide includes useful checklists, spaces to write notes and best-practice examples. The guide is suitable for all optometrists and those who manage optometrists, to help address problems and open conversations with managers and colleagues.
