Don’t get caught out by poor contact lens hygiene

Caring for your eyes when camping at summer music festivals

With the summer music season getting started, and around 750 UK festivals taking place this year, we’re reminding contact lens wearers how to avoid infections and stay irritation-free with our kit essentials for festival goers.

Ceri Smith-Jaynes, optometrist and AOP spokesperson, said: “Contact lenses can be used easily and safely at festivals. Simple steps will help ensure eye infections and more serious corneal infections – which can cause pain and scarring of the eye, permanently impairing vision – are avoided.”

Ms Smith Jayne highlighted the need to keep contact lenses clean from bacteria, advising: “Unless you want to leave a festival early to see your optometrist, make sure you never touch your contacts, or eyes, with dirty hands. Use anti-bacterial wipes or gel and remember to always carry some with you, in case you need to remove your contacts mid set.”

Other advice includes keeping hydrated and when to seek medical attention. An ‘essential kit list’ for contact lens wearers has also been issued, which you can find in our press release.
