GOS Scotland
Scotland, uniquely, has different GOS regulations to the rest of the UK. Optometrists offering GOS must have additional accreditation to their GOC registration.
The Scottish system offers free GOS eye examinations to the entire population. The patient is entitled to a Primary Eye Examination at a set interval (dependent on age and underlying medical condition) and Supplementary eye examinations as necessary in between.
The fees for Primary eye examinations are:
|
£45 |
primary eye examinations for those aged 60 and over where a digital photo is taken |
|
£40 |
primary eye examinations for those aged 60 and over where no digital photo is taken |
|
£37 |
primary eye examinations for those aged under 60 |
The fee for Supplementary examinations is £21.50
When carrying out a Supplemetary examination, the optometrist must mark down on the form the code for the reason for the examination:
|
Code |
Condition/examination |
|
2.0 |
Cycloplegic refraction following primary examination |
|
2.1 |
Paediatric follow-up* |
|
2.2 |
Referral refinement / repeat or follow-up procedures |
|
2.3 |
Suspect glaucoma |
|
2.4 |
<60 dilation and biomicroscopy |
|
2.5 |
Anterior segment disorder |
|
2.6 |
Cycloplegic refraction at request of hospital |
|
2.7 |
Postoperative cataract examination |
|
2.8 |
Reduced acuity, sudden vision loss, flashes and floaters or neurological symptoms - note that code 2.8 requires "sight test, macular assessment tests, slit lamp biomicroscopy which may include mydriasis" as a minimum, plus other tests and procedures as appropriate. |
* Code 2.1: There appears to be a hole in the regulations here. Paediatric follow-up should be "within 6 months". If the child comes back at 7 months there is no supplementary code which applies - however, the child cannot have a new primary examination until 12 months. The AOP is working to solve this issue.
A consolidated version of the full GOS (Scotland) regulations is available at the bottom of this page as well as other detailed guidance that the AOP has produced.
Record Card Audit
AOP Scotland has developed a record card audit tool. This Excel spreadsheet allows you to check your own record cards to ensure that you are recording everything necessary for a payment verification visit. Click on the link below to use it.
