A Clinical Guide to Evaluation of the Optic Nervehead

This course will review the different ways the optic nerve may be involved in glaucoma. Included will be a discussion on the early optic nerve signs, five steps to evaluate the nerve as well clinical methods to assess optic disk size and its use in evaluating the optic nerve for glaucomatous damage.  Also to be discussed will be the new instruments used to image the optic nerve and retinal nerve fiber layer.

  1. Recognise signs of glaucomatous optic neuropathy.
  2. Learn a new simple method, the 5Rs, to evaluate the optic nerve.
  3. Different ways that glaucomatous optic neuropathy may present.
  4. Understand the new optic nerve/retinal nerve fiber layer imaging instruments and how they are used.
  5. Understand the role of confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscopy and how it may be used to follow for glaucomatous optic nerve progression.
