About the AOP

How the AOP works

The AOP is governed by its Council, which is made up of 45 members elected by the membership. The Council meets twice a year (May and November) to discuss issues and advise the Board of Directors.

The Board of Directors is elected by the Council and meets approximately every six weeks.

The Board decides on policy for the Association and ensures that progress is being made towards the AOPs strategic goals.

The 24 employed staff at the AOP work under the Chief Executive to implement the strategies and policies set by the Council and the Board of Directors.

Four committees are elected which report to the  Council and to the Board of Directors:

Education;
Negotiation and Legislation;
Primary Care;
Membership;

The  Finance Sub-Committee and the Remuneration Sub-Committee report to the Board of Directors.
