AOP Board and Council

The AOP is governed by its Council, which is made up of 45 members elected by the membership. The Council meets twice a year (May and November) to discuss issues and advise the Board of Directors.

The Board of Directors is elected by the Council and meets approximately every six weeks.

The Board decides on policy for the Association and ensures that progress is being made towards the AOPs strategic goals.

The 40 employed staff at the AOP work under the Chief Executive to implement the strategies and policies set by the Council and the Board of Directors.

The AOP has a number of committees run jointly with other optometric bodies:

  • Education
  • Primary Care
  • Contact Lens
  • Domiciliary Eyecare
  • Information & IT
  • Low Vision

The AOP Membership Committee and Hospital Optometrists Committee are composed of AOP Council members and meet quarterly.

The Finance Sub-Committee and the Remuneration Sub-Committee report to the Board of Directors.
