In addition to the general law governing the choice and use of business names, section 28 of the Opticians Act 1989 governs and restricts the use of terms such as “optometrist” and “dispensing optician”, known as “restricted titles”. The General Optical Council is the administrative and regulatory authority in this sphere. Companies House requires confirmation from the GOC that a business seeking registration as a company is entitled to use a restricted title in its name.
